lyrics

La negra Juana llegó a Cádiz.
La trajeron de Guinea
Por su belleza sin par,
Su piel era negra azulá.
La vendieron por alhajas
Por ser princesa real,
Y al penar por su tierra
Ella bailaba por no llorar.
Así le dio el aire de África
Y al flamenco su compás.

Translation:

Juana, the black girl, arrived at Cadiz.
She was snatched from Guinea
For her unparalleled beauty,
Her skin was black and blue.
She was sold for riches
For she was a royal princess,
As she agonized remembering her homeland,
She danced not to cry.
Thus, she gave to flamenco
The air and rhythm of Africa.
